Events/Activities 

          Events like Essay writing competition, Drawing competition, Elocution competition, Book Review competition, etc. are organized from time to time to make the Children’s Corner a lively and interactive hub of activity. The events organised by Children’s Corner since it was established, are:

 

 

·        Inauguration of Children’s Corner in Parliament Library: On 21 August 2007, Shri Somnath Chatterjee, the then Speaker, Lok Sabha, on whose initiative the project was undertaken.  The function was attended by a number of dignitaries from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Principals of various Schools, Heads of Prominent NGOs, etc. Children of National Bal Bhawan, New Delhi, presented a cultural programme on the occasion.

 

Children’s Day, 2007: A story telling and painting event titled ‘Chacha Nehru Ka Gulab’ was organized on 14 November 2007 to celebrate the Children’s Day. The function was organised in association with Bachpan Society for Children’s Literature & Culture. About 100 children from the underprivileged sections of the society from five NGOs took part in various activities. 

 

·        Literary and Cultural Activity Week: A five-day literary and cultural event for the underprivileged children in association with Bachpan Society was organised from   26-30 May 2008. About 125 children from five NGOs, viz Bal Ashram, Mobile Creche, Abhas, Saksham Bharati and Pratham participated in various activities like story writing, poetry recitation, Quiz competition on Festivals of India, preparation of greeting cards, computer animations, creating newspapers, etc

 

World Environment Day, 2008: The World Environment Day was celebrated on 5 June 2008. The event was organised in association with Ambpali, an organization working for children and women on environment related issues.

 

·       First Anniversary of Children’s Corner: To commemorate the first anniversary of Children’s Corner, a Group Discussion of children on “Influence of computer/internet on reading habits of today’s children” was organised on 21 August 2008. About 60 children from Bal Bhavan, New Delhi, Manzil (NGO) and members of Children’s Corner participated in the event. 

 

·      Children’s Day, 2008: An On-the-spot Drawing Competition was organised to mark the Children’s Day on 14 November, 2008 in which 144 children including children from three registered NGOs namely: SOS Children’s Villages of India, PRAYAS and Salaam Baalak Trust and children having membership of Children’s Corner participated. The Secretary-General, Lok Sabha, Shri P.D.T. Achary distributed prizes and certificates to the winners of the competition on 10 January 2009 on the occasion of Lok Sabha Secretariat Foundation Day. Certificate of participation was also given to the participants.      

 

·    Second Anniversary of Children’s Corner: On the 2nd Anniversary of Children’s Corner on 21 August 2009, a Book Review Competition was organised in association with the National Book Trust.  Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha, Shrimati Meira Kumar interacted with children and awarded prizes to the winners. Certificate of participation was also given to the participants.

 

·      Children’s Day, 2009: An On-the-Spot Drawing Competition was organised in the Children’s Corner.  The themes given were (i) Life of Chacha Nehru; (ii) Freedom Movement;   (iii) Unity in Diversity of India; and (iv) Environment Protection. In the competition, 186 children in two age groups i.e. 8-13 years and 14-17 years participated.  There were 32 children from SOS  Children’sVillages of India, 35 children each from PRAYAS Juvenile Aid Centre Society and Salaam Baalak Trust and 84 children who were members of our Children’s Corner. Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha, Smt. Meira Kumar distributed prizes and certificates to the winners during Prize Distribution Function held on  16 January 2010 on the occasion of celebration of 81st Anniversary of  Lok Sabha Secretariat. Certificate of participation was also given to the participants.

 

·    Third Anniversary of Children’s Corner: To commemorate the 3rd Anniversary of Children’s Corner, a Creative Essay Writing Competition was organized on the themes (i) National Flag; (ii) Constitution of India;  (iii) Parliament of India; and (iv) Commonwealth Games, 2010 in the Parliament Library Building on  21stAugust 2010. Out of 224 Children     (8-17 years) who participated in the competition, 100 children were from three registered NGOs; (i) 35 Children from Salaam Baalak Trust; (ii) 32 Children of SOS Children’s Villages of India; and (iii) 33 Children from Prayas Juvenile Aid Centre Society.  124 members of the Children’s Corner also participated in the competition.  All the participants were given a bilingual dictionary as a token gift in appreciation of their participation. Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha, Smt. Meira Kumar distributed prizes and certificate to the winners during Prize Distrubution function held on the occasion of the 82nd Anniversary of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.  Certicate of participation was also given to all the participants.  The Secretary General, Lok Sabha, Shri T.K. Viswanathan also graced the occasion.

 

·      Children’s Day, 2010:  An On-the-Spot Drawing Competition was organised wherein 268 children in two age groups i.e. 8-13 years and 14-17 years participated.  There were 32 Children from Sparsh Social Welfare & Charitable Organization, 35 Children from Deepalaya and 27 Children from Smile Foundation.  Apart from this, the other participants were 174 children who were members of the Children’s Corner of Parliament Library.  The themes for the Competition were (i) Parliament Museum; (ii) Festivals of India; (iii) Portrait of National Leaders; and (iv) Commonwealth Games, 2010.  Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha, Smt. Meira Kumar distributed prizes and certificates to the winners during Prize Distribution Function held on the Occasion of the 82nd Anniversary of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.  Certificate of participation was also given to all the participants.  The Secretary General, Lok Sabha, Shri T.K. Viswanathan also graced the occasion.

·      4th Anniversary of Children’s Corner: The 4th Anniversary of Children’s Corner was celebrated on 21st August 2011. To commemorate the occasion an on-the-spot Drawing Competition was held in the Banquet Hall of parliament Library Building.  281 Children’s including the members of Children’s Corner and from three NGO’s dealing with the welfare of the Children from the marginalized sections of the society namely (i) SOS Children Village of India (ii) Salam Baalak Trust and (iii) Manav Mission Trust participated in the competition.  The participants were divided into two age groups i.e. 7-13 years and 14-17 years. The topics approved for the competition were - (i) Our Parliament (ii) A scene at Polling Booth                       (iii) Republic Day Parade (iv) Independence Day Celebration at Red Fort (v) Freedom Struggle and (vi) Water Conservation.  Participants were intimated about the topics in advance and they had the option choosing one topic out of these.  A lot of enthusiasm and excitement was seen in the participants. The Secretary General, Lok Sabha, graced the occasion by interacting with the children and gave his blessings and good wishes to them.    

 

·      Children’s Day, 2011: On Children’s Day, the 14 November, 2011 a Creative Essay Writing Competition was organized by the Children’s Corner in Main Committee Room of Parliament House Annexe. 200 Children, 91 from three registered NGOs and 109 members of Children Corner participated in the event. Children were divided in to two age groups i.e. 8-13 and 14-17 years. Separate topics were given to both the age groups.

          

                           The topics approved for the age of group 8-13 years were (i)Deepawali (ii) Republic Day (iii) My Favorite Leader (iv) A memorable day of my life (v) Good Manners and the topics for the age group of 14-17 years were (i) Influence of Internet on Children  (ii) My perception of environment friendliness (iii) Social Status of Women in Indian Society (iv) Meaning of Independence for me (v) Right to Education Participants were intimated about the topics in advance and they had the option to choose one topic out of these and write in English or Hindi.

        Shri Oscar Fernandes, Chairman, Standing Committee on Human Resource Development, who is also Vice-President of the Parliamentary Forum on Children, surprised everyone by his presence at the event. He met the participating children in the Main Committee Room (PHA) and interacted with them and blessed them.

      

The programme was concluded with the presentation of token gifts to all the participants.

 

·    5th Anniversary of Children’s Corner: The 5th Anniversary of Children’s Corner was celebrated on 21st August 2012. To commemorate the occasion, a Creative Essay Writing Competition was organized in the Main Committee Room, PHA. Themes approved for the competition were (i) Youth Power in Indian Parliament; (ii) Life sketch of present President of India; (iii) Environment Pollution; (iv) Summer Olympic Games 2012. 174 Children including members of Children’s Corner and from three registered NGOs namely (1) SOS Children Village of India (2) Salaam Baalak Trust and (3) Sparsh Social Welfare and Charitable Organization participated in the Competition. Participants were divided into two groups i.e. 8-13 years and 14-17 years and were intimated about the topics in advance. All the participants were given a Reference Book as a token gift. Children had shown much enthusiasm and more eagerness to learn. Therefore, the function concluded with children’s eagerness and will to participate in such competitions in future with more enthusiasm. 

 

 

·    Children’s Day, 2012: To commemorate the Children’s day, Children’s Corner organized an On-the-Spot Drawing Competition on 19th November 2012 in the Banquet Hall of Parliament Library Building, wherein 166 children (88 children from three recognized NGOs namely (1) SOS Children’s villages of India, (2) Deepalaya, (3) Manav Mandir Mission Trust and 78 members of Children’s Corner) in two age groups i.e. 8-13 years and 14-17 years participated in the competition. Themes for the competition were (i) Portrait of Prime Minister of India ; (ii) National Monument; (iii) Festivals of India; (iv) National animal or bird. All the participants were given token gifts. The Secretary General Sh. T.K. Viswanathan and Hon’able Speaker Smt. Meira Kumar graced the occasion and gave away the prizes and certificates to the winners of Creative Essay Writing Competition held on 21st August 2012 and also interacted with the children. 

 ·    On-the-Spot Drawing Competition on 25th November 2012: An On-the-Spot Drawing Competition was also organized by the Children’s Corner on 25th November 2012 in the Banquet Hall of Parliament Library Building, wherein 188 Children (101 children from three recognized NGOs namely (1) Deepalaya, (2) Sparsh Social Welfare and Charitable Organization (3) Salaam Baalak Trust and 86 members of Children’s Corner) participated. Participants were divided in two age groups i.e. 8-13 years and 14-17 years. Indian Parliament was the sole theme. Before the commencement of the competition, all participants were shown the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha Chambers and the Central Hall in the Parliament House so that they might have an idea about them which could help in attempting the competition. 



·    6th Anniversary of Children’s Corner: The 6th Anniversary of Children’s Corner was on 21st August 2013 and on this occasion; a Creative Essay Writing Competition was organized in the Main Committee Room, PHA. Themes approved for the competition were (a) Parliamentary Democracy in India; (b) Focus on Child Labour in Indian Society; (c) Salient Features of National Integration (d) Environmental Degradation as a Cause for Natural Calamities. 187 children including members of Children’s Corner and from three registered NGOs i.e. ANK, CHETNA and SAKSHI participated in the competition. Participants were divided into two groups i.e. 8-13 and 14-17 years and were intimated about the topics in advance. Children were with full of enthusiasm to participate in such competitions in future also. 

·    Function to celebrate the Children’s Day: The Children’s Corner organized a Story Writing Competition in the Main Committee Room, PHA on 19th November 2013 to celebrate the Children’s Day, which falls on 14th November every year. 182 children including members of Children’s Corner and from three registered NGOs i.e. SOS Children’s Villages of India, Sparsh and SAKSHI participated in the Competition. Participants were divided into two groups i.e. 8-13 and 14-17 years. Themes approved for the Competition were eight stories from Panchatantra/Jhatak kathayee. Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha, inaugurated the Competition and also gave away the prizes to the winners of the Creative Essay Writing Competition held on 21st August 2013 to mark the 6th Anniversary of the Children’s Corner. Secretary General, Lok Sabha graced the function. Children responded over enthusiastically by rendering songs and also shown full interest in the Competition.  



· Function to celebrate the Children’s Day, 2014: The Children’s Corner organized an Essay Writing Competition in the Main Committee Room, PHA on 14th November 2014 to celebrate the Children’s Day. A total of 126 Children (67 children from 3 registered NGOs i.e. Salaam Baalak Trust,Sparsh & Sakshi and 59 member children of Children’s Corner) participated in the Competition. The participants were divided into two age groups i.e. 8-13 and 14-17 years.

                         The topics approved for the age group of 8-13 years were (i) Life Sketch of our Prime Minister (ii) General Election,2014 (iii) Environmental Degradation and its Impact (iv) Cleanliness Is Next to Godliness and the topics for the age group of 14-17 years were (i) Life Sketch of Speaker, Lok Sabha (ii) Indian Foreign policy (iii) Rising Terrorists activities and its Socio-Politico impact (iv) Social Networking - Boon or Bane.  Participants were intimated about the topics in advance and they had the option to choose one topic out of these and write in English or Hindi.

        The Secretary General, Lok Sabha, graced the occasion by interacting with the children and gave his blessings and good wishes to them.

       The programme was concluded with the presentation of  token gifts to all the participants.


· Function to celebrate Children’s Day, 2015: The Children’s Corner organized “On-the-Spot Drawing Competition” to mark the celebration of Children’s Day on 14th November 2015 in the Main Committee Room, PHA. A total 203 Children {88 children from 3 different registered NGOs viz. (i) Deepalaya (ii) Sparsh (iii) Sakshi, and 115 member children from Children’s Corner} participated in the Competition. The participants were divided into two age-groups i.e. 8-13 and 14-17 years. The topics approved for the age group of 8-13 years were (i) Portrait of any National Leader, (ii) Village Scene, (iii) Save Environment and the topics for the age group of 14-17 years were (i) Clean India Green India, (ii) Support Disabilities, (iii) My City at 2020. Participants were intimated about the topics in advance and they had the option to choose one topic for drawing out of these. The time limit for it was of one- hour duration. Participants were given stationary kit (pencil, eraser, pencil color box etc.). Participation by girls was more than the boy this year. A lot of enthusiasm and excitement was seen in the participants. All the children were served snacks. Shri Anoop Mishra, Secretary-General, Lok Sabha inaugurated the Drawing Competition and gave his blessings and good wishes to the participants. The programme was concluded with the presentation of token gifts to all the participants. .


· Ninth Anniversary of Children’s Corner:  The Children’s Corner organized an “Essay Writing Competition” of one hour duration on 27th August 2016 in the Main Committee Room, PHA to celebrate the Ninth Anniversary of the Children’s Corner. In total 173 children (78 member children of Children’s Corner and 95 from three NGOs viz. SOS Villages of India, Deepalaya, and Butterflies) participated in the Competition. The participants were divided into two age groups i.e. 8-13 and 14-17 years. The subjects of Essay attempted by the age group of 8-13 years were (a) Child Labour, (b) Yoga and its benefits, (c) Women Freedom fighters and for the age group of 14-17 years were (a) Holy River Ganga, (b) Importance of Vocational Education, (c) Technology and Development. The participants had the option to write on any one topic either in English or in Hindi medium. Shri Anoop Mishra, Secretary General, Lok Sabha inaugurated the Essay Writing Competition. He interacted with the participants and gave his blessings and good wishes to them. A lot of enthusiasm and excitement was seen in the participants. The programme was concluded with the presentation of token gifts to all the participants.


 Children’s Day 2016: The Children’s Corner organized a Drawing Competition of one hour duration on 19 November 2016 in the main Committee Room, PHA to celebrate the Children’s Day. In total 156 children {84 from three NGOs viz. (i) Butterflies, (ii) Navjyoti India Foundation, (iii) Salaam Baalak Trust and 72 member children of Children’s Corner} participated in the competition. The participants were divided into two age groups i.e. 8-13 and 14-17 years. The topics approved for age group of 8-13 years were (a) Save Water, (b) My Favorite Game, (c) A Historical Monument and for age group of 14-17 years were (a) Child Labour, (b) Unity in Diversity,(c) My Green Planet. The participants were intimated about the topics in advance. Shri Anoop Mishra, Secretary General, Lok Sabha inaugurated the Drawing Competition. He interacted with the participants and gave his blessings and good wishes to them. Dr. D Bhalla, Secretary, Lok Sabha also graced the occasion. A lot of enthusiasm and excitement was seen in the participants. All the Children were served refreshment. The programme was concluded with the presentation of token gifts to all the participants. .


 Tenth Anniversary Day of Children's Corner: The Children’s Corner organized an ‘On the Spot Essay Writing Competition’ of one hour duration on 24th August 2017 in the Main Committee Hall, BPST to celebrate the Anniversary function. In total 154 children {86 children from three NGOs viz. (i) Chetna, (ii) Navjyoti India Foundation, (iii) Vatsalyam Gurukul and 68 member children of Children’s Corner} participated in the Competition. The participants were divided into two age groups i.e. 8-13 and 14-17 years. For the first time, all the participants were given the topics on the spot. The topics for age group of 8-13 years in Hindi were, - (i) यदि मैं वैज्ञानिक होता, (ii) पुस्तकालय का महत्व, (iii) इंटरनेट के लाभ तथा हानियाँ, (iv) अनेकता में एकता का देश भारत, (v) मेरी माँ and topics in English were -(i) National Integration, (ii) India of my dream, (iii) Education beyond school bags, (iv) Women Empowerment , (v) My mother.


The topics  for age group of 14-17 years in Hindi were - (i) यदि मैं सैनिक होता, (ii) कल का भारत या 21 वीं सदी का भारत, (iii) मन के हारे हार है, (iv) बढ़ती जनसंख्या: एक जटिल समस्या and topics in English were -(i) If you become Prime Minister of India for one day, (ii) Plastic: a new and powerful enemy, (iii) The Practices you wish to change in Indian Social System, (iv) War and Peace.

             Shri Anoop Mishra, Secretary General, Lok Sabha inaugurated the Essay Writing Competition. He interacted with the participants and gave his blessings and good wishes to them. Dr. D Bhalla, Secretary, Lok Sabha and Shri Atul Kaushik, Additional- Secretary also  graced the occasion. A lot of enthusiasm and excitement was seen in the participants. All the Children were served refreshment. The programme was concluded with the presentation of token gifts to all the participants.


 Children’s Day function, 2017:  The Children’s Corner organized ‘The Tenth On the Spot Drawing Competition’ of one hour duration on 21st November 2017 in the Main Committee Hall, BPST to celebrate the Children’s Day. Shri M. Thambidurai, Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha inaugurated the Tenth On the Spot Drawing Competition. He gave his blessings and good wishes to them. Shri Anoop Mishra, Secretary General, Lok Sabha and Dr. D Bhalla, Secretary, Lok Sabha also graced the occasion. A lot of enthusiasm and excitement was seen in the participants. All the Children were served refreshment. The programme was concluded with the presentation of token gifts to all the participants.

In total 120 children {29 member children of Children’s Corner and children from three NGOs viz. (i) SOS Children’s Villages of India (32), (ii) Deepalaya (30), (iii) Vatsalyam Gurukul (29)} participated in the competition. The participants were divided into two age groups i.e. 8-13 years and 14-17 years. All the participants were given the topics on the spot.
The topics for age group of 8-13 years were - (1) Impact of Polluted Air, (2) Village Scene in Moonlight, (3) Design a ‘New Toy’, (4) Your Favourite Cartoon, (5) Indian Festival.
For age group of 14-17 years, the topics were - (1) Energy Conservation, (2) Future City, (3) Indian Farmer, (4) A Portrait, (5) Ocean Animal.

 

 Children’s Day function, 2018:  The Children’s Corner organized ‘On-the-Spot Drawing Competition’ of one hour duration on 27th November 2018 in the Main Committee Hall, BPST to celebrate the Children’s Day. Shri Ganpati Bhat, Additional Secretary of Lok Sabha inaugurated the On-the-Spot Drawing Competition. He gave his blessings and good wishes to them. Smt. Kalpana Sharma, Joint Secretary, Lok Sabha and Smt. Sushma Rungta, Director, also graced the occasion. A lot of enthusiasm and excitement was seen in the participants. All the Children were served refreshment. The programme was concluded with the presentation of token gifts to all the participants. In total 177 children {86 member children of Children’s Corner and children from three NGOs viz.

 

(i) Sakshi (29), (ii) Butterflies (27), (iii) Salaam Baalak Trust (35)} participated in the competition. The participants were divided into two age groups i.e. 8-13 years and 14-17 years. All the participants were given the topics on the spot. The topics for age group of 8-13 years were - (a) Clean and Green India, (b) My Favourite Sport, (c) My Garden, (d) My Favourite Animal, (e) Our Heritage, (f) Book Fair, (g) Life Without Technology, (h) My Dream.
